DJ Quik was born David Marvin Blake in Compton, California on January 18, 1970.
He discovered music early and started working as a DJ and releasing mix tapes
while still a teenager. His debut album, Quik Is the Name, charted in the top
30, and the singles “Tonite” and “Born and Raised in Compton” were R&B hits. His
follow-up, Way 2 Fonky, was a top 10 album that cemented his reputation as one
of the architects of the gangsta sound. The making of 1995’s Safe + Sound, led
him to a relationship with Suge Knight that resulted in Quik doing production
