Possibly related to Memphis Slim and Muddy Waters, Eddie Boyd played the piano in Mississippi juke joints from an early age, leaving them after a racial incident in the '30s. He performed in Memphis, then moved to Chicago, where he scored a huge hit with one of his own compositions, Five Long Years. He signed with the Chess label, for whom he recorded a dark, introverted work, with titles such as "24 Hours" and "Third Degree".
