American jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz was born in Baltimore and studied at the Juilliard Conservatory of Music. From 1962-64 he was a member of Charles Mingus' Jazz Workshop. During the 1960s he also played live with Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach. His first appearance on record was on the album 'Soul Finger' by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1965. When McCoy Tyner formed his Expansions band in 1968 Bartz was recruited on alto sax.
