Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, was raised in Vancouver's goth and industrial
scenes, and started performing and recording while studying Russian language and
neuroscience in Montreal. Drawing on a variety of influences from the punk of
Blink 182 to 1990s R&B stars like Mariah Carey to the shoegaze Cocteau Twins,
her early albums 'Geidi Primes' (2010) and 'Halfaxa' (2010) were initially given
away on cassette and as free downloads as Grimes toured the country living in a
tent and performing to handfuls of people.
