After first learning to play the strings on a ukulele, Irving Ashby went to
Boston for musical training in the late '30s. He joined Lionel Hampton's
orchestra in the early '40s and collaborated with Fats Waller on the famous film
"Stormy Weather". In the late '40s, he worked mainly with Nat "King" Cole, the
pianist who pioneered trio formations with guitar. He was also asked by Norman
Granz to join the musicians of the JATP project, and then worked again in a trio
