London's dance and electronic scenes started to evolve in the early 2000s from garage, grime and drum'n'bass into a darker, sparse, sub-bass sound known as dubstep. At the forefront of the new genre was pirate radio station Rinse FM and Croydon record store Big Apple Records, which supported and developed the young DJ/producers Skream, Benga and Artwork.
