American singer and actress Melba Moore was raised in Harlem, New York City and
rose to prominence firstly as an actress in the musical 'Hair' playing the
character Dionne. She later replaced Dianne Keaton in the role of Sheila and
subsequently went on to win a Tony Award for her part in another musical, the
Broadway hit 'Purlie'. During this period she also won two major film roles but
it is as a singer that most people will remember her.
