Merle Watson and his music will forever be immortalised through the annual MerleFest set up in his memory in his home county of North Carolina. Watson began playing guitar after his father, the bluegrass singer/guitarist Doc Watson, influenced and encouraged him to pursue his talents. They began performing together from when Merle turned 15, and with bassist T. Michael Coleman they formed a trio, playing all around the world and recording 15 albums. Tragically, in 1985, when Merle was just 36, he lost his life in a tractor accident at the family farm.
