Born in Brooklyn (New York, USA) in 1936, Mort Shuman died in London on December 2, 1991, following liver surgery, after composing - with or without his writing partner Doc Pomus - a multitude of rock classics for Dion, The Drifters or Elvis Presley, then The Hollies,The Small Faces or Janis Joplin. In 1966, he staged the highly successful musical Jacques Brel Is Alive and Living in Paris in London, introducing English audiences to the Belgian singer's work, before doing the same on Broadway two years later.
