The Portuguese-Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado was born on December
2, 1978 in Victoria, USA. She learned to play various instruments such as the
piano, trombone and guitar as a child. She began composing her own songs at the
age of 12. Her first solo album Whoa, Nelly! (2000) brought her international
attention. Driven by the first single "I'm Like a Bird", her mixture of pop, R&B
and folk elements takes her on a journey that ends with a Grammy for Best Female
