Renato Teixeira de Oliveira (May 20, 1945) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and
one of the country's biggest cultural assets. Deeply rooted in the regional
genre of sertanejo and folk-rock, his music is also linked to caipira culture, a
phenomenon native to rural areas throughout the interior of Brazil. Born in the
neighborhood of Santos Sin ão Paulo, he rose to fame in the late 70s with the
song "Romaria," which was later covered by Elis Regina in her eponymous 1977
