Although he achieved tremendous commercial success as the frontman of the
multi-platinum rock band Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas has received his most
significant artistic recognition outside of the band. In 2000, he won three
Grammy Awards as the co-writer and singer on Santana's hit song "Smooth," which
topped the Billboard Hot 1oo for 12 weeks in 1999 and 2000. Thomas was still in
his twenties at the time, having been born on February 14, 1972, in Landstuhl,
