Although initially labeled as an outlaw country artist, Sturgill Simpson reached far beyond country music as his career progressed, exploring everything from southern rock to psychedelic music. Born June 8, 1978 in Jackson, Kentucky, he moved to Oregon during his late teens and served three years in the United States Navy. After the end of his bluegrass band Sunday Valley, he moved to Nashville and recorded his first solo album, High Top Mountain, in 2013.
