Tonton David was a French reggae artist who scored more than a half-dozen Top 40
hits during the 1990s and early 2000s, thanks to his unique combination of
ragamuffin, hip-hop, Caribbean, and Congolese influences. Born David Grammont on
October 12, 1967, he spent his earliest years on Réunion Island before moving to
Gambia, Senegal, and Paris. Such a diverse upbringing helped inspire an equally
diverse sound, and Tonton David recorded his first single, "Peuple du monde," in
